I usually try to sit in the orchestra and even with TDF have had very good luck that way. For Encores however I sit front row of the balcony right in the center and that seat is fine. When I went to see the recent Music Man at the Winter Garden, I sat in the last row of the mezzanine and in the furthest right seat. Forthat show and that theater, it was a fine seat. I missed nothing and got a great panoramic view of the stage. It truly depends on the theater and the show and the staging. It also depends on how much I am willing to spend on any particular show (hence for The Music Man 499 was what I was willing to spend and that is what I got. I have spent full price on other shows (e.g. Sweeney Todd) though never premium price. In the main, I am prepared to sit further away from the stage for most musicals than I am for non-musicals and if there is a star I really want to see, I usually like to be close up.
