I saw the tour that played the Studebaker Theater in 1969. The cast included Diana Sands, Julius La Rosa, Adam Wade, and Theresa Merritt. It was definitely the first Broadway musical I ever saw on stage. I was 20 at the time. I loved the show. Sands didn't have pipes like Leslie Uggams, but she acted the part of Georgina beautifully. Theresa Merritt almost stole the show as Momma and really knocked "Back in the Kitchen" and "I Don't Know Where She Got It" out of the park.
There's nothing offensive about Halleluhah, Baby!. However, it's approach to racial progress is too naive and outdated, especially when viewed today. |
