Although a couple (but not most) of those productions were first done onstage, as Chromolume notes, they were shot in television studios. Some that sound like they have an audience did not really have a live audience. What was done with Wonderful Town and I think some others is that as the cast was performing in a studio, there was a live audience watching the performance on a screen in another theatre, and that audience's laughter and applause was piped in for the audio.

Re the Kiss Me, Kate: That was on video (although it seems that only kinescopes exist). It was to have been done live, but there was a threatened stagehands strike. To be safe, it was shot on videotape, which had only recently been developed. Because videotape was so new, they kept having technical problems, and multiple takes had to be done. Because of this, George Schaefer, the director, felt it did not come off nearly as well as it would have if it had been done live. He felt the actors lost spontaneity from having to do so many takes. Hard to believe as it seems pretty terrific to most of us, especially Alfred Drake.
