I think you're right about SNL harnessing these actor's skills in a unique way, but rather miss the mark in your dismissal of their post-SNL careers.

I don't think you can discount that an actor's career will ebb and flow; Eddie Murphy is not as hot as he was in the 80s, but then few stars stay consistently at the apex of the culture, and Murphy has worked regularly for the past 40 years, making movies that garner critical attention and awards.

Two people who have managed to stay at the apex of the culture in the 20 years after they left SNL, with no sign of stopping: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Another, whatever you feel about him: Adam Sandler (who should have been Oscar nominated for "Uncut Gems").

A third: Chris Rock.

McKinnon made a big splash in "Barbie", along with Will Ferrell, who is bouncing back into the spotlight after a quiet decade (as an actor - his work as a producer is responsible for a lot of the film and TV shows that are out there). Oscar and BAFTA nominee Wiig had a big role in the second Wonder Woman film, but that got lost in the Covid and also wasn't very good; "Barb and Starr" was a big hit in the comedy community, but not wider... but she's still a comedic genius who was buzzed about for her bit at the Golden Globes with Ferrell, so I think we'll see more from her soon.

Maya Rudolph works constantly. Bill Hader gave us "Barry" and Jason Sudeikis gave us "Ted Lasso". Martin Short is still killing it on "Only Murders in the Building", with Molly Shannon joining the cast in Season 4 after making a smash in three seasons of "The Other Two". Cecily Strong is charting a career in theater, following in the footsteps of Ana Gasteyer and Christine Ebersole, multiple Tony-winner.

I could dig up more, but I think I've offered plenty of examples.
