"I think what you're seeing IS Bowen's talents. He's not a very good 'actor,' he's a funny comedy person."

I've always thought that that is likely true of many of the performers who break through and become stars via SNL. For performers who are at the top of their game in sketch comedy, a very particular sub-genre, SNL is the absolute pinnacle of their profession. And, when they leave the show, they never seem to find anything else that suits them as well. Many of these folks have done movies or television shows, but few have had the impact doing anything else that they had as a sketch comic on SNL.

Even actors like Eddie Murphy and Chevy Chase, who had huge careers in film for a short while, saw those melt away as their audiences moved on. Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon made really good choices, Fallon after a failed film career, to segue into talk shows where they can also showcase their comedy sensibilities. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is really the only ex-SNL cast member who's had a huge career as an actress doing 3 different long running television series and making appearances in films all the while. Two relatively recent cast members who made a huge splash on SNL and quickly became stars of their casts were Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. On the show, it seemed like there was nothing those women couldn't do. But post-SNL, again, neither has really set the world on fire.

Kenan Thompson may be the smartest of them all. He clearly found his niche on SNL and is sticking with it for the long haul.
