I have a hunch that the Gertrude Lawrence lights dimming was considered (or perhaps designated) an official establishment of a tradition, which would be repeated for the passing of very legendary performers. If the Jolson dimming really did occur, it may have only been a simple gesture for a beloved actor with no precedent intended.

I've also found more than one source that leads me to suspect that Ethel Merman was honored with two separate dimmings -- the first on the night of her passing and the second 5 days later when her son held the urn of her ashes in front of the Imperial Theatre.

I can not find any confirmation, but it is hard to believe that both Mary Martin and Alfred Drake did not receive a Broadway lights dimming. I would imagine that there have been certain newspaper reports that just are not present in any on-line database and thus can not be retrieved.
