The original production of Chicago was a hit, albeit a small one (according to all official sources). Some famous (although sadly unknowledgeable) people like Barbara Walters claimed for years that it was a notorious flop. Of course, it was nowhere near as successful as the revival, which has been running on Broadway for decades.

The current revival of Merrily is pretty unique. It's a smash hit and sells out nearly every performance, while the original ran for 16 (official) perfs and 44 previews. Of course, top billed on the revival is one of the most famous movie stars (and fine theatre actor) on the planet.
