I can't speak to their financial situation, but unless it conflicted heavily with film and TV work, I find it hard to believe she couldn't have made time for a 2-3 week rehearsal and a 3 month run in Sweeney. I think she would have been a bigger draw on Broadway in 1980 than she was even in film. At the time of replacing Lansbury, she would have been enjoying the notable success of Ten, made with her husband Blake Edwards (with a budget of 6 mil and a box office of 107 mil, I hope they both got a good pay day for this), and perhaps gearing up to shoot Edwards' movie SOB.

I'm sure there were reasons. Maybe it never came into her mind, or Hal/Steve's. And of course there are things going on in any actors life or career that aren't on wiki, including booked jobs that didn't turn into released products. Who knows.

I'm just saying I think it would have been possible, and I bet it would have brought in a lot of people to see her in it.

(I also think the news/buzz of a triumphant turn in a show like Sweeney, and her return to Broadway in a role like that, would have done very positive things for her appeal, but there's always the chance she'd have floundered in the role and maybe that wasn't a risk she was interested in)
