I have to agree with you. On my annual theatre trips to London I've tended more to plays than musicals and have always seen thrilling productions, but found my last trip very disappointing.

Dear Octopus with Lindsay Duncan at The National, The Human Body with Keeley Hawes at the Donmar, Nachtland at the Young Vic and Jez Butterworth's The Hills of California directed by Sam Mendes were all overrated in my opinion. I thought much of the casting was especially bad - these were really the best actors available for the supporting and ensemble roles? The only show I can say I thoroughly enjoyed was an exquisite and intimate in-the-round production of Uncle Vanya, adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn, at Richmond's Orange Tree Theatre, that actually dared to set the play in the 1890s.
