We've resorted to seeing more opera/ballet as the state of the West End has been quite disappointing (not to mention that audience behaviour keeps sinking to newer and lower levels...do people really need to take bottles of wine to their seats?).

STANDING AT THE SKY'S EDGE: An Olivier Award winning transfer from The National that is a pretentious bore. It has a half-way decent book but the songs render it nearly incoherant and have little connection to the story which stops the action cold every time an actor starts to sing. However, as it is set in a housing estate in a working-class town it is to be considered highly worthy and therefore must be lauded and admired. I thoroughly hated it and despite awards and critic's hosannas, it is struggling to fulfil its booking period at The Gillian Lynne.

BIG LITTLE THINGS: Exhibit A in why new writers need to learn that there is more to making a musical than merely making the actors sing. It contains a few halfway decent tunes but structurally lacks craft. I wanted to be moved but it left me cold and more than a bit irritated.

OPERATION MINCEMEAT: Another Oliver Award-winning musical that wears out its welcome after the first 20 minutes. And if you don't like the style/tone and the 'aren't we clever' nature of that first 20 minutes, you are in for a very long evening.

MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO: Currently at the Barbican where it is been the hottest ticket in town and soon tranferring to The Gillian Lynne, this play might astound you if anime is your thing and if you enjoyed the film, but my husband and I thought it was trite children's theatre with some decent effects and quite a slog to sit through. After a mildly entertaining first half, the second act seem to go on and on and on...Take your kids who might love it and/or if you are a fan of the source material but otherwise, you might regret it.
