I thoroughly enjoyed The Magic Flute. The production was delightful. Zimmerman's adaptation and staging is fanciful and sprightly. Emily Rohm was certainly impressive as the Queen of the Night and (I assume) is a legitimate opera performer. However, Billy Rude (as Tamino), Shawn Pfautsch (as Papageno), Marlene Fernandez (as Pamina), and Lauren Molina (as Papagena) are all mostly musical theatre performers (I believe), as is Devin DeSantis (understudy for Pagageno and Monostatos).

I had no trouble following the story, although I wasn't quite sure if Sarastro was the bad guy or someone a little more complicated than that. I thought the show was funny, beautifully sung and acted, more of an operetta than an opera. However, I have only a superficial knowledge of opera. True opera enthusiasts may well find Zimmerman's version to be disappointing.
