This begs the question-- what exactly is great? I am sincerely glad you enjoyed it. But a "great book?" Was it especially well written? Did it do anything that the movie didn't already do? Was there excellent (new) dialogue or character development? I think not. So, enjoyable, sure. But not great. The score, even if you enjoyed it, is decidedly not great. Some of the lyrics are terrible, the music forgettable and the creators don't even quite understand what's important to musicalize (does the show really need to stop cold for a song for the minor character of the Goldie?). I don't want to take anything away from your enjoyment, but I am sure you know the the difference between "great" music (Sondheim, Porter, Gershwin) and serviceable, fun music. In the bigger picture, I worry that audiences do not understand the difference, which is why every show is getting standing ovations. I was shocked that Mother Play got a loud ovation when the lights went down at the top of the show-- I have never seen that at a play (and definitely found it confusing at when at Into the Woods, people cheered as if Lady Gaga was about to take the stage), but the gratuitous/ unearned clapping does seem to be here to stay. And when you say it "deserved more Tony nominations," which nominees do you think deserved their nominations less (I have my picks, but I think I'd have given those slots to Here Lies Love and Days of Wine and Roses before BTTF)? Because, of course, for BTTF to have gotten more, someone would have to have gotten less. |
