| I understand creating a sense of the place, transporting the audience to that place by using the accent - like Italy. And it does help often. I want the Emcee and other German characters in Cabaret to speak with that accent. But also, they aren't all speaking the same language, or they are and it's English because that's the neutral common language between them. But when it takes place in a country where everyone is speaking a foreign language and they're all speaking the same one, it's not worth doing it if everyone can't do it very well, because it takes you out of it, not to mention hindering the acting of the actors who struggle. I always love what they did in Coast of Utopia where everyone spoke in their natural American accent (and presumably British, for the brits in the cast? I forget -- but not Russian), until the moments when they were speaking English to non-Russians, and then they spoke English with a heavy Russian accent. Then they went back to non-accented English when they were speaking Russian again. And I don't think the accents were a notable problem for me in the Nine revival... except for Jane. Her attempt at an Italian accent completely ruined her "Simple", aka "seeeeeample". Embarrassing for an otherwise extraordinary performance. And that is 1 of her 2 major songs. There is of course no need at all to do Italian accents in Nine. Almost everyone is meant to be Italian, speaking Italian to each other. The producer should have a French accent. Someone like Antonio can and did speak with their nature accent if they are from Spain or another romance language accented-country. Otherwise, leave it alone. |
