Must accents always be done? Cariou didn't do one in the original Sweeney. And was Lansbury doing an accent particular to her character's birthplace or other influences, or just Angela Lansbury's accent?

On the other hand I remember in the Original London cast recording of Les Miserables some cockeny accents, which seemed very strange since the characters are French. Were those actors using their own way of speaking, or was cockney meant to convey a lower class French person?

Another I really disliked was the Nine revival. All these thick put on Italian accents. Or in the case of Chita, a not so great French accent, which is only a thing because the character was built around a French person in the original. Raul Julia was just Raul Julia. Karena Akers, Anita Morris, Shelly Burch, just all spoke and sang in their own voices. We KNOW the show is set in Italy.
