I love this conversation, so many good answers! I'm always partial to two of their most popular songs from Oklahoma and The Sound of Music.

Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry
When I take you out in the surrey
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top
Watch that fringe an' see how it flutters
When I drive them high-steppin' strutters
Nosy pokes'll peek through their shutters and their eyes will pop!

He paints such an active, vivid picture with so much economy. But I can see every detail of the moment in my mind.

My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees
My heart wants to sigh like the chime that flies from a church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook as it trips and falls over stones on its way
To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray
I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
And I'll sing once more

So rich in emotion and poetry without being cloying or sentimental.

I love that he always starts just a little to the left of where you'd expect, but still finds a way to convey the message and emotion so clearly. He gave us so many masterpieces of the art form.
