| I was taught that Rodgers & Hart collaborated together, in real-time, knocking out the melodies and lyrics right there in the room. Even when Larry was too tipsy for anything especially good. I was taught that Hammerstein, however, penned his lyrics first -- completely on his own -- and then handed the completed lyrics to Dick, who composed songs to match the rhyme and meter of the lyric. Is that correct? What I really notice -- when looking at Hammerstein's lyrics for "The Sound of Music" that you've shared here -- is that he seemingly delivered lines that grew shorter and shorter between each rhyme, which almost begs the composer to draft more legato phrases that could be held on longer notes, doesn't it? Seems to say that the guy really knows how Rodgers liked to stretch out a melody! What do we know about their process? - GMB |
