When MISS SAIGON first opened in NY, Lea Salonga did the Saturday matinee and was off the evening. I assumed this was so she could have a longer rest, since the show was dark on Sundays. At some point during her run, the schedule switched. I saw her in June 1991 at the Saturday matinee the day before the Tonys. When I saw the show again that October, the alternate was doing the Saturday matinees and Salonga the evenings.

Specific to the original topic, I always wondered if anyone had ever undertaken putting together any metrics on this. Personally, if there is a particular performer I really want to see, I try not to schedule that for a two-show day. This is based on nothing but my feeling as an audience member leaving some matinees and wondering how in the world they call on the stamina to turn around and do it all over again in a few hours. (Well, and the fact that the couple of times I missed a major star were on two-show days.) But I've seen plenty of interviews with actors who talk about the mindset of a two-show day. It's just a muscle they build. But overall, thank goodness the overwhelming majority of Broadway actors are thorough professionals who would rather take a punch in the face than miss a show.
