Here is my memory from Williamstown and some additional thoughts. Overall, after seeing in at Williamstown I wasn't convinced it was going to have a life. It was very broad, in scope, but lacked heart. The music pounded things into the emotional core of the characters. It constantly felt "important" but the beautiful production saved it from being arrogant. What has genuinely surprised me is that they have kept Eden in the lead. The night we saw it, she had major pitch problems. Recently, I saw The Gardens of Anucia and again she had pitch problems.
I'm trying to remember if there was anything about the plot that really excited me, but I can't, and I know I felt cold by it all when I left the theater. The good news is they have certainly had time to improve things. I just wasn't convinced back then it was even worth pursuing. The powerful woman as the lead in a musical has a long history, so I understand why they pursued this. For me, at that time, the execution did not live up to the expectation.
Thought #1 I cannot remember the last time a musical with so much built in visual style has lacked such a cohesive advertising strategy. It's almost comical the different slogans and styles they are throwing out there to sell tickets.
Thought #2 Go see it for Amber Iman. Amber Iman is the reason I will be seeing this again. She is extraordinary. She has replaced Carmen.
