JELLY'S LAST JAM last night

Overall, a great production of an imperfect show. Nicholas Christopher is stellar, Billy Porter is perfectly cast in a role that doesn't require any stretch of his natural abilities. Great ensemble work, with Broadway-ready dance sequences that repeatedly brought the house down. Incredible choreography. Focused direction that really fleshes out this world in a beautiful and creative way.

A few odd outliers ... the show drags and drags and drags, so why not pare down some of the weaker material? Especially for a "concert" presentation? And double especially if this is truly a tryout for a Broadway transfer. It's also an odd type of a musical, where the book and choreography is so much more compelling than the music, which is just ... meh? Some fine numbers here and there but nothing that sticks in the brain. Most of the dragging is in less-than-great songs, although some transitions and acting beats could easily be tightened.

From the balcony, the sound design (much maligned already) felt incredibly weak, as if the band (which often felt slow, lugubrious, and underpowered) were playing underwater.

Nothing that couldn't easily be fixed if the production found another life, although I would expect that to be an incredibly big producing gamble, even if Porter (assuming he could memorize the additional 5% of the script he needed to read last night) stayed attached.
