| Shakes Hands With the Devil is terrific, and he's very good in what is really the central role, surrounded by great actors. "Dream With Me" is the song that was cut from the Bernstein Peter Pan. A couple of sources, including John Oller's bio of Jean Arthur, say it was intended for Peter. Other sources say it was intended for Wendy, and I have tended to trust those sources more. Anyway, in the book of Bernstein letters edited by Nigel Simeone, there's a letter from Marc Blitzstein to Bernstein that confirms that the song was intended for Wendy before it was cut. Blitzstein was entrusted by Bernstein to oversee, with Trude Rittman, the score once rehearsals started since Bernstein was away conducting. |
