Wikipedia seems to think that Al Jolson may have preceded Lawrence in receiving the honor. Their article states "On the day he died, Broadway dimmed its lights in Jolson's honor." He passed away on Oct. 23, 1950. However, Wikipedia also states Lawrence "was the first person for whom the house lights were dimmed in all Broadway theaters." She passed away on Sept. 6, 1952.
