As far as I know, the first time the lights were dimmed were for Gertrude Lawrence. As far as I know, the second time was for Oscar Hammerstein. The third may have been for either Alfred Lunt or Richard Rodgers. Not really sure, nor am I sure if it was done for Merman or Martin. Maybe I'll try to find out later, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get answers. Dimming the lights was an extremely rare event till fairly recent times.

Had the frequency been more . . . frequent, some of those people for whom it was not done might well have received the tribute.
