I agree with your assessment where Foster hit that traditionally big "Shy" note; it didn't have that much of an impact, because the audience around me didn't laugh or stir, which I believe they most likely did when Burnett sang it (and there's probably evidence on a variety show with an audience like "Ed Sullivan"). It's a big note on the OCR and is much stronger than what she has previously sung. One person who would have been zany, and who might have summoned enough voice on specific notes (like the one we've mentioned) for Winnifred, might have been Gilda Radner back in the day. One reason Sarah Jessica Parker was noted for not succeeding in the part (besides lack of suitable voice) was that she's a comedic actress, but not a clown. Burnett and Radner certainly could clown around in this show, which was basically a successful summer camp show which was fleshed out. Sutton Foster was fairly goofy, but some of her staged antics during "Song of Love" seemed like a watered down version of her truly amazing choreography that she did while singing "The Show-Off" in "The Drowsy Chaperone". Yes, the audience sounded like it was the second coming, but maybe that's from a buildup of affection of previous roles where she was better suited.

Michael Urie, David Patrick Kelly and Harriet Harris' comedy was greatly appreciated; Cheyenne Jackson sounded quite good and Nikki Renee Daniels really lovely, with some beautiful top notes. "Very Soft Shoes" didn't work for me -- seemed eminently worth cutting in this case, but it's a short show even with it included. In listening to its overture, it's really not one of the outstanding ones. I forget if they are featured in it, but the "Spanish Panic" and "Song of Love" are more memorable than some of the tunes included in the existing overture.
